  25.      ABOUT THE TURF.v93 PROGRAM

  27.        The TURF.v93 Thoroughbred Handicapping System is a powerful
  28.        and highly advanced, highly sophisticated, yet easy-to-use,
  29.        thoroughbred race handicapping system.  It combines sound,
  30.        well-established race handicapping principles with scientific
  31.        statistical analysis methodology, applied to years' worth of
  32.        actual race data, to create a handicapping tool which can
  33.        be used at race tracks, from Belmont Park to the county
  34.        fair, at OTB or anywhere thoroughbreds are racing and a
  35.        Daily Racing Form or similar publication is available.
  36.        It includes a full-screen data entry system, with on-line,
  37.        context-sensitive help, and a rating capability which will
  38.        help even the novice race-goer predict the outcome of
  39.        thoroughbred races.

  42.      ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  43.  
  44.        The author is a professional Software Engineer (a fancy name
  45.        for Computer Programmer) who has been programming computers
  46.        since before PCs even existed.  His first handicapping program
  47.        was written on punch cards in a batch job entry mainframe
  48.        environment.  He has worked for years as a defense contractor,
  49.        writing programs for highly sophisticated, high-tech defense
  50.        and intelligence projects.  His experience in handicapping
  51.        horse and dog races dates back even further than that, having
  52.        patronized and collected race data for many years from a
  53.        variety of tracks as diverse as Garden State and Atlantic
  54.        City to Churchill Downs and Keeneland to Turf Paradise and
  55.        the county fairs of Arizona, as well as Greyhound tracks in
  56.        both Florida and Arizona and Jai-Alai frontons in Florida.
  57.        He has combined his many years of experience in high-tech
  58.        computer programming and scientific statistical analysis
  59.        methodology with sound, well-established handicapping
  60.        principles to create this powerful, yet easy-to-use,
  61.        automated handicapping system.

  64.      ABOUT VERSION 1.00

  66.        Don't be misled by the version number; this is not a new
  67.        program.  This is the same program the author has been
  68.        using as his personal handicapping system for years.  It
  69.        has been debugged, tested and put to use in the real world,
  70.        i.e. at the race track.  Real money has been wagered based
  71.        on the predictions from this program.  You too can be
  72.        confident that with the TURF.v93 system as your handicapping
  73.        tool, your hard-earned money is not being thrown away.  You
  74.        will have a definite edge over all the other bettors who are
  75.        still wagering "by the seat of their pants" or using old-
  76.        fashioned handicapping methods to support their selections.
  77.        And just in case you're one of those people who might wonder
  78.        why, if this system is so good, would the author decide to
  79.        sell it to others and not keep all the valuable information
  80.        provided by it to himself?  A good question!  It just so
  81.        happens that, at the time of this writing, the author lives
  82.        in a small town in Arizona which doesn't have a race track.
  83.        The nearest racing is a long drive away and the author can't
  84.        get there as often as he might like.  His misfortune; your
  85.        gain.

  88.      ABOUT RACE HANDICAPPING
  89.  
  90.        Having said all that about the power of the TURF.v93 system
  91.        to predict races, a reality check is in order.  No handi-
  92.        capping system, including TURF.v93, is magic.  This is not
  93.        a crystal ball which can peer into the future and guarantee
  94.        its user great wealth from race wagers.  What the TURF.v93
  95.        system is, in fact, is a powerful predictor of the PROBABLE
  96.        outcome of races.  It examines multiple factors regarding
  97.        the race being run, the entries in the race and the recent
  98.        past performance history of those entries, and weighs those
  99.        factors to compute the PROBABILITY of each entry winning
  100.        the race.  Remember that some races cannot be handicapped.
  101.        Some races are won by animals that seem to have no business
  102.        running, let alone winning.  Some runners that seem to be
  103.        head and shoulders above the rest of the field - a "lock" -
  104.        don't come in.  Some wagers that actually do win don't pay
  105.        enough even to cover the amount of the wager.  There is no
  106.        substitute for sound human judgement.  Don't throw money
  107.        around like you expect to win every race you handicap or
  108.        profit on a wager which is a bad investment.  Pick and
  109.        choose your wagers wisely.  Remember, the ultimate goal of
  110.        race handicapping is not to be able to brag about how many
  111.        winners you can predict, but to profit on the wisdom of
  112.        your selections over the selections of the other bettors.
  113.        The TURF.v93 system is a powerful tool which can provide
  114.        the confidence for its users to do that, but the sound
  115.        human judgement part is left to each user to exercise.

  120.        This program is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind,
  121.        expressed or implied.  The author cannot be responsible for
  122.        any damage or loss, indirect or consequential, resulting from
  123.        the use of this program.

  126.      BACKING UP THE TURF.v93 MASTER DISK
  127.  
  128.        Please be sure to make a backup copy of the master disk before
  129.        proceeding with installation.  This is your safety net in case
  130.        anything should ever happen to your original disk.  In case of
  131.        an accident, you'll be glad you have it.

  133.        To make a backup copy:

  135.          >Type:

  137.              DISKCOPY  A:  A:

  139.           and press ENTER.  Follow the prompts, inserting the TURF.v93
  140.           master disk when the SOURCE disk is requested and your backup
  141.           disk when the TARGET disk is requested.  When the copy is
  142.           completed, press "N" for "No More Copies".  (If you have two
  143.           floppy disk drives you may be able to substitute the command:

  145.              DISKCOPY  A:  B:

  147.           for the above.)  See your DOS manual for more details on the
  148.           DISKCOPY command.

  151.      INSTALLING THE TURF.v93 PROGRAM
  152.  
  153.        The TURF.v93 master disk contains the following files:

  155.           TURFV93.EXE  - the automated installation program,
  156.           READ.ME      - a quick-start, informative introduction to
  157.                          the TURF.v93 system (this file), and
  158.           README.BAT   - a simple listing utility to assist in the
  159.                          reading of the READ.ME file.

  161.        If you have the ShareWare distribution disk for the TURF.v93
  162.        system, your master disk should also contain the files:
  163.  
  164.           REGISTER.DOC - the program registration form,
  165.           UPGRADE.DOC  - the version upgrade registration form, and
  166.           VENDOR.DOC   - the program distribution information file.
  167.  
  168.        The following is the recommended procedure for installing
  169.        your TURF.v93 system on a hard drive; you may need to taylor
  170.        it somewhat to your particular needs:

  172.          >At the DOS prompt, create a subdirectory called TURF.
  173.           To do this, type:

  175.              MD  \TURF

  177.           and press ENTER.

  179.          >Go to the subdirectory you just created by typing:

  185.          >Insert the TURF.v93 master disk in drive A and type:

  194.          >When the installation is complete, your TURF directory

  199.             TURF.TRK     - a directory of American thoroughbred

  202.                            the TURF.v93 system (this file),

  205.             TURF.DOC     - the TURF.v93 operations manual.

  207.           If you have the ShareWare version of the TURF.v93 system,
  208.           your TURF directory will also contain the files:

  221.             SHOWDATE.EXE - the SHOW_DATE utility for translating
  222.                            encoded dates, and
  223.             SHOWDATE.DOC - the SHOW_DATE utility operations manual.

  225.           Your TURF.v93 system is now ready for use.  Store your
  226.           original disk in a safe, clean place.

  228.  
  229.      CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM
  230.  
  231.        Depending on how your system is configured for video display,
  232.        you may need to install the video driver ANSI.SYS.  You will
  233.        know if your system requires ANSI.SYS if, when you start the
  234.        program, you get "garbage" (actually "Escape sequences") all
  235.        over your screen instead of neat, organized display.  The
  236.        basic procedure for installing ANSI.SYS is to include the
  237.        following command in your CONFIG.SYS file:
  238.  
  239.           DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
  240.  
  241.        You may need to include a "path" to ANSI.SYS if your system
  242.        can't otherwise find it.  See your DOS manual for more details
  243.        on the installation of ANSI.SYS.

  246.      RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  247.  
  248.        Start the program from the TURF subdirectory.  If you are
  249.        not certain which directory you are in currently, type:
  250.  
  251.           CD  \TURF
  252.  
  253.        and press ENTER.  Now simply type:

  255.           TURF

  257.        and press ENTER.

  259.        (The program assumes, by default, it is talking to a color
  260.         monitor.  If you have a monochrome monitor, or you expe-
  261.         rience display problems, replace the "TURF" command with:
  262.  
  263.           TURF /NC
  264.  
  265.         and the program will proceed on the assumption it is now
  266.         talking to a monochrome monitor.)

  269.      GETTING ON-LINE HELP
  270.  
  271.        Typing "?" at any time during the running of the program
  272.        accesses the context-sensitive on-line help utility.  The
  273.        current data entry field is explained in full at the touch
  274.        of a keystroke.  Press the ENTER key to page through the
  275.        help screens for the current topic and then to return to
  276.        the current data entry screen.  (The help function may be
  277.        aborted by pressing the ESCAPE key.)

  279.        Typing "?" a second time accesses the general program
  280.        operation help screen.  This screen summarizes the special
  281.        key functions available for data entry and editting.
  282.  
  283.        If you are a first-time user of the TURF.v93 program, it
  284.        would be a good idea to take the time to invoke the HELP
  285.        utility for each entry, or until you are comfortable with
  286.        the data entry system.

  289.      SHAREWARE
  290.  
  291.        If you have a registered version of TURF.v93, you may skip
  292.        these sections of the documentation.  This information is
  293.        directed at those users who are using the limited-use, trial
  294.        version of the system.
  295.  
  296.        Your version of the TURF.v93 Thoroughbred Handicapping System
  297.        is user-supported software, or ShareWare.  That is, it is not
  298.        free software.  It is copyright (c) 1994 and the intellectual
  299.        property of its author.  Non-registered users are granted a
  300.        limited license to use the TURF.v93 system on a trial basis
  301.        for the purpose of determining whether it is a suitable product
  302.        for their needs.  Use of the TURF.v93 system, except for this
  303.        limited purpose, requires registration.  Use of non-registered
  304.        copies of TURF.v93 by anyone is strictly forbidden.

  306.        All users are free to copy and distribute the trial version of
  307.        the TURF.v93 system for the trial use of others subject to a
  308.        few restrictions:

  310.          >TURF.v93 must be copied in unmodified form, complete with
  311.           all licensing and registration information.

  313.          >No fee, beyond a nominal handling charge, is charged for its
  314.           use, copying or distribution.

  319.      REGISTRATION

  321.        A TURF.v93 registration provides the user license to use the
  322.        system on a regular basis.  Not only does this registration
  323.        fulfill a legal obligation for users who wish continued use
  324.        of the product, but it supports the ShareWare system of user-
  325.        supported software.  Without user support for products, the
  326.        authors of this and other programs cannot afford to upgrade
  327.        and enhance their programs, not to mention create new programs
  328.        for public use.

  330.        Beyond issues of legality and clear conscience, however, there
  331.        are further benefits to registering the TURF.v93 program.
  332.  
  333.          >You will be eligible for technical support.  If you have any
  334.           questions regarding the operation of the TURF.v93 system,
  335.           feel free to write.  (Sorry, mail support only.  This staff
  336.           of one couldn't possibly afford the time to provide phone
  337.           support and still program the computer, not to mention go
  338.           to work and occasionaly spend time with the kids.)  Comments
  339.           and suggestions are always welcomed.

  341.          >You will be able to upgrade to an enhanced version of the
  342.           TURF.v93 system - TURF(Plus).v93.  For just a few extra
  343.           dollars, you will be sent this enhanced version which con-
  344.           tains increased capability over the trial version.  (Rest
  345.           assured the trial version is in no way a "crippled" version
  346.           of TURF.v93; the identical full-screen data entry system,
  347.           on-line help facility and scientific race prediction formulas
  348.           are available in each.  TURF(Plus).v93 is simply a superset of
  349.           the trial version.)

  351.           TURF(Plus).v93 will, first of all, bypass those introductory
  352.           and sign-off screens which, after you've read them once or
  353.           twice, you really don't need to see again.  More importantly
  354.           though, the enhanced version contains a data save/restore
  355.           function which will permit you to save all the race data
  356.           you've entered into the system.  The trial version does not
  357.           save your data.  With the TURF(Plus).v93 enhanced system:
  358.  
  359.           >>You can store files containing all the races you'll ever
  360.             handicap.  With these files, you can review race predic-
  361.             tions after the race has been run.  You can update your
  362.             original data entries (for instance, to revise "added
  363.             weight", a value not available until post time) and rerun
  364.             your predictions to monitor the effect.  You can store with
  365.             your race data, the results of the races you've handicapped,
  366.             including pari-mutual prices.  And you won't have to retype
  367.             the entire race data to do all this because the data restore
  368.             function will reload the race for you.  With the addition of
  369.             the TURF_REVIEW program, described below, you can even keep
  370.             a running accounting of how your program is doing, race
  371.             after race, day after day, year after year.

  373.           >>You will be sent an additional program called TURF_REVIEW.
  374.             TURF_REVIEW keeps a running account of how your handicapping
  375.             system is doing.  You can review 1 race or hundreds of races
  376.             just by entering the name of a Race Data File, which has
  377.             been saved by your enhanced TURF(Plus).v93 program, or a
  378.             directory of Race Data Files.  You will then see a composite
  379.             tally of how many winners your program has picked, as well
  380.             as how many places or shows, how many Quinellas, Exactas or
  381.             Trifectas, and even how successful it has been picking by a
  382.             variety of boxing and wheeling strategies.  This could be a
  383.             valuable quide to how you might wish to bet on future races.

  386.             SHOWDATE which converts dates to and from the unique,
  387.             5-digit date code used in the naming of Race Data Files.
